Rub on Your Birth Control? Meet the New Contraceptive Body Lotion

It sounds strange, but there are new reports that a contraceptive gel or body cream may be available in the near future. Would you ditch the pill for a cream?

is reporting that the pill may soon be a moisturizer: "A new topical contraceptive gel that works in the same way as the pill has shown similar effectiveness when applied to the shoulders, arms, legs or abdomen daily--and works without the side effects of sickness, weight gain, or a muted sense of sexual desire," blogger Clay Dillow reports.
Similar to the contraceptive patch, the birth control "lotion" is said to release hormones directly into the skin. (Yeah, you probably wouldn't want to shower or go swimming directly afterward!) No word yet on when the newfangled gel might make its way to a pharmacy near you, but it's intriguing just the same.
I'm curious: If the reports are true, that it has less side effects than other hormonal birth control options, would you slather this stuff on?

Midterm elections are just days away, and the youth organization The League of Young Voters Education Fund doesn't want your vote to go up in smoke. They have announced their ‘Pledge To Vote' campaign for the 2010 November 2 midterm elections and are commissioning the support of Hip-Hop heads to urge the youth to get out and cast their ballot.
Rapper and weed connoisseur Wiz Khalifa recently sat down with the The League to discuss his thoughts on the legalization of weed in California and the importance of getting your voice heard at the polls. The Pittsburgh native expressed his thoughts on rocking the vote, saying,

“Make sure you get out there and vote on November, it counts...No matter what it is for. If its something you believe in, go out there and support it.”

The LYVEF is an organization with a focus on non-college youth, youth from low-income communities and communities of color. In an effort to bring awareness to the midterm elections, LYVEF is encouraging young urban voters to pledge and register to vote at November2nd.org, to voice their opinions and be proactive in the change they want to see in their communities.
Other Hip-Hop supporters include Jermaine Dupri, Far East Movement and Big Tigger.

75% of incapacity claimants are fit to work: Tough new benefits test weeds out the workshy

Three-quarters of people who applied for new benefits for the long-term sick failed tests to prove they were too ill to work.
Out of about 840,000 who tried to obtain the £95-a-week Employment and Support Allowance, 640,000 were told they were fit for work, or withdrew their applications before they took the tests – suggesting they were ‘trying it on’.
Incredibly, 7,100 tried to claim because they had sexually transmitted diseases

Assessment: Incapacity benefit claimants have to now go through a medical test to determine if they should receive a payment. The test includes how far people can walk, if they can bend to touch their knees and whether they can hold a pen

The disclosure by the Department for Work and Pensions raises fresh questions over how many of the 2.6million people on the existing incapacity benefit are really incapable of being employed.
The figures suggest that if they were tested to the same extent the number would fall as low as 650,000.
This would slash the £12.5billion bill for incapacity benefit to just over £4billion a year.
The Government is pushing ahead with trials in Burnley and Aberdeen to re-test existing incapacity benefit claimants. If successful, the tests will be implemented nationwide.

 

The Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) was brought in two years ago for new applicants. It will eventually replace incapacity benefit, which is worth up to £91.40 a week.
All new claimants now have to undergo work capability assessments through a private contractor, Atos.
The first three months are paid at a lower weekly rate of £65, while their claim in the form of a questionnaire about their condition is considered along with information from their doctor.
They may then be asked to go for a full medical assessment. More than a third of claimants voluntarily give up the benefit within three months, however, rather than undergoing the medical tests.

Employment minister Chris Grayling said the reforms were about giving those who can work help to do so and those who cannot extra support

Even so, those who have failed or avoided the test since it was introduced have managed to claim as much as £500million in total before being screened out.
Those who go in front of Atos-hired doctors are tested on how far they can walk, how long they can sit and whether they can bend and touch their knees.
They also have to show whether they can hold a pen or pencil and do up a button.
Those who can do basic physical tasks are tested for their communication skills and whether they can cope with change.
People who are found to be sick are then put into three groups: those who need permanent support, those who might be able to work after a few months and those who are fit to work.
Since October 2008, just 51,000 people have been put on the new sickness benefit indefinitely, meaning there is genuinely no hope of them being able to work again.
Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: ‘With over two million people trapped on incapacity benefits, these figures underline how important it is that we make sure everyone who has the potential to work gets the right help to move off benefits and into a job.’
He added that ministers had asked independent experts including charities to assess whether the medical tests were working.
Mr Grayling said: ‘This is not about pushing the sick and disabled into jobs but giving those that can work the help to do so and those that can’t more, not less, support.’
A detailed breakdown showed how people with a range of medical conditions were trying to get the benefits.
Nearly 10,000 people have applied for the ESA because they are too fat – a condition which is labelled ‘endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases’.
Of those applicants, just 600 were allowed to stay on sickness benefit.Of the 7,100 people have applied to go on sickness benefits because they have said they have sexually transmitted diseases just 600 were allowed to stay on the ESA.
One Whitehall source said: ‘This is about government giving these people a nudge.
‘It costs more to help them into work, but in the long term it is better for them, it is better for their communities and it is better for our economy.’
A spokesman for the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: ‘The high proportion of people who are found to be fit for work or who stop claiming before they are medically tested proves the Government is right to press ahead with reforms.

‘Now these payments can be directed to those who truly need them without being lost at the hands of opportunists and those who are capable of employment.’
Reforms to incapacity benefit are a key to Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith’s radical reforms plan for the benefits system, which accounts for £1 of every £10 spent by the Government.
Douglas Alexander, the shadow work and pensions secretary, pointed out the reforms had been introduced under Labour.
He said: ‘These latest figures show this reform put in place by Labour can help people make the transition from welfare into work.

The entire police force of a small Mexican town have quit after gunmen attacked their headquarters on Monday.
Los Ramones in Nuevo Leon in the north of the country has seen fighting between the Gulf and Zetas drug gangs, tearing the state apart.
Santos Salinas, Mayor of Los Ramones said nobody was injured but that all 14 members of the force resigned today.


Troubled town: All 14 members from the Los Ramones police force in Mexico resigned today after gunmen attacked their headquarters shooting more than a thousand rounds and launching six grenades. Bullet holes: The armed fire caused damage to the building and patrol truck, blowing out windows and shattering glass.
Police stations in small northeastern Mexican towns are frequently attacked and several mayors have been assassinated.
Mexico's ill-equipped municipal forces often quit after attacks by cartels.
President Felipe Calderon has proposed eliminating Mexico's municipal forces and replacing them with one force per state.
Meanwhile, the bodies of two men, one of them decapitated, were found in a Mexican border city earlier today.
Police suspect they may have been behind the massacre of 14 young people at a birthday party.
The bodies were found inside an SUV in Ciudad Juarez, said prosecutor Jorge Gonzalez Nicolas.
One of them had been decapitated and his head was left in the car. Both bodies had their hands and feet bound and bore signs of torture.
A sign left with the bodies accused them of killing women and children.
Gonzalez said the message raised the possibility that the two men were involved in the attack on the party Friday night.

Gunmen pulled up to two homes next door to each other in a lower-middle-class Ciudad Juarez neighborhood and opened fire on about four dozen partygoers gathered for a 15-year-old boy's birthday party.
The dead were 13 to 32 years old, including six women and girls.
Gonzalez said the survivors would be shown photographs of the faces of the two men found dead.
The two men appeared to be in their early 20s, which coincides with accounts from some of the survivors, he said.
One survivor has said that a gunman who appeared to be about 20 opened fire on the crowd after nobody would answer questions about a car parked outside the houses.

More than 6,500 people have been killed in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, since a turf war erupted two years ago between the Juarez and Sinaloa drug cartels.
It has become the deadliest city in Mexico, where nationwide, more than 28,000 people have died in drug-gang violence.
Calderon had deployed thousands of troops and federal police in late 2006 to step up the assault on cartels.

Loud is the upcoming fifth studio album by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna, scheduled to be released on November 12, 2010,^[2] on Def Jam Recordings. Recordings began in February 2010^[3] for a period of six months, concluding in August 2010.^[4] The lead single, "Only Girl (In the World)" was released on September 10, 2010 as a digital download. The singles that will follow are "What's My Name" and "S&M". ^[1][5]

Background

In June 2010, it was revealed that Rihanna was planning to release the fifth studio album soon.^[6] Singers, songwriters and producers Taio Cruz,^[7] Alex da Kid,^[8] Sean Garrett,^[9] Ne-Yo,^[10] Rico Love, Timbaland,^[11] Shontelle,^[12] David Guetta,^[13] and Drake^[14] worked on the album. "I'm gonna miss the Rated R era too, but nothing compares to the album I just made," Rihanna said, adding,"I made sure not to let you down with my music. You guys are always defending me, so now you’ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn’t want to go backward and remake Good Girl Gone Bad. I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna, and it’s perfect for us".^[4] In early September 2010, she announced that the album would be called, Loud saying that "get Loud everybody, get crazy, get excited, because I'm pumped. I'm just gonna be me, because that's what you guys love the most, and that's what makes me feel best. Just being normal, normal for me is Loud! Sassy, fun, flirty, energetic."^[4] While Rihanna was on set filming for the movie Battleship, she explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, "Loud is, the word, the name of the album definitely reflects the attitude of it, it’s really sassy and flirty and it grabs your attention and that’s why I enjoy it. It takes you through a really really interesting ride. So colorful the album.” ^[15] The cover of the album was revealed on September 28, 2010.^[16]

Music and lyrics

Tracks have been penned by Shontelle,^[17] Ester Dean^[18] and Nicki Minaj.^[19] Stargate produced fizzing synths, club beats and sing-along chants featured heavily, with three songs on the album, "Only Girl (In the World)", "What's My Name?" and "S&M". "Cheers", which Rihanna also referred to by its working title, "Drink It Up", is a funky, loping guitar groove dedicated to a night on the town and interpolates Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You". "California King (Bed)" is a strummed, acoustic ballad.^[20] "S&M" is the loudest track on the album.^[5] Rihanna described "Raining Men" as "a really fun song. Nothing like the original. It's quite uptempo but kind of quirky and funny."^[19] Rihanna and Drake have described their duet, a remix to "What's My Name" as a "young" and "playful" track.^[21]

A New Michael Jackson Album in November 2010?

TMZ has confirmed the Michael Jackson estate has signed the biggest deal ever in music -- worth up to $250 million with a guarantee of $200 million.
The estate made the deal with Sony Music Entertainment. According to the Associated Press, the contract is for 10 projects over seven years.
One album will debut in November, which contains never-before released recordings. We're told Jackson left enough material for at least three albums of fresh material.
A source tells TMZ the royalty rate on foreign sales is the key to the deal -- and 2/3 of the sales of MJ records traditionally have been outside the U.S.
And we're told Sony gets a two-year extension for the right to distribute the Michael Jackson catalog -- to 2017.
The deal was brokered by John Branca and John McClain, executors of the MJ estate.
